In order for dental hygienists to understand the relevance and importance of the updated classification system, a brief explanation will be given on how the system was improved to help clinicians better communicate with each other and be more effective in the treatment of their patients/clients. More than 110 world-renown clinicians and researchers, including presenter Dr. Glogauer, were involved in the immense task of revising and improving the classification system, a collaboration by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and the American Academy of periodontology (AAP), published in 2018.
Participants will benefit from this first-hand knowledge of why there was need for an updated classification system, considered the most evidence-based and clinically relevant system ever proposed, and why dental professionals around the world should adopt it in their practice. This informative session includes a review of the updated system as it relates to periodontal health and gingivitis, and how the new terminology facilitates clinical communication worldwide. Participants will also learn what the classification system means in practical terms and how it can be used to improve person-centred care and influence a client’s overall health and behaviour. This lecture will help clarify expectations by the College of Dental Hygienist of Ontario (CDHO) on how clinicians apply the classification system in their practice.
- Discuss how the system enhances precision care and its role in treating the whole person.
- Recognize the need and benefits of the updated global classification system.
- Understand the methodology of the system.
- Explain the classification of health and gingivitis.
- Session handout will be provided.
